Deadpool & Wolverine – A Final Sendoff To Fox

Deadpool & Wolverine

Marvel Cinematic Universe has not been doing well in phase 5, and Deadpool & Wolverine is supposed to be the movie that changes it for the MCU. Ironically, they had to depend on the Fox Universe IPs to revive the MCU, the same MCU that was dominating the box office pre-Fox-Disney merger.

Every MCU fan was looking forward to this movie as it officially introduces the X-Men to the MCU, and who better to lead the introduction than Wolverine and Deadpool?

Does Deadpool & Wolverine deliver, read on to find out.

Story

The story starts with Deadpool after his ‘time and multiverse’ jumping adventure at the end of Deadpool 2. The adventures from the end of Deadpool 2 have left him empty, with no purpose and reduced to living an uneventful life.

A knock on the door by TVA sets up the main story through which Wade Wilson visits the TVA and fanboys around all the major events from MCU & Fox history.

The events at TVA embark him on a quest to team up with one of the biggest heroes from Marvel Comics to ever turn up on the big screen, The Wolverine.

The hunt for the perfect Wolverine leads to some amazing Wolverine variants showing up on the screen. These appearances may or may not be the only time they show up, but they sure keep the door open for unlimited future possibilities.

The main villain Cassandra Nova is just another character menacing enough to threaten Deadpool and Wolverine, but overshadowed by the main plot and the amazing duo of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Deadpool & Wolverine is essentially a buddy movie with some amazing pit stops and shoutouts to some of the best characters from the Fox universe, and Marvel movies both from within and outside the MCU.

Characters

The movie is a chock-a-block of characters from the wide Marvel Universe, many old ones and a bunch of new ones.

The trailers show quite a few of them but there are some unseen surprises, there are a whole bunch of heroes of past and present that you would least expect to show up, but when they do, it does make sense.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool brings the energy to the screen that is expected of him. The moves, the dance, the action everything is on point.

The movie is R Rated which helps since the shit that comes out of Merc With A Mouth is next level. This is almost on par with the kind of creative expletives you see in the Amazon Prime Show “The Boys”, that’s how good/bad it is.

The whole Breaking the 4th Wall shows Deadpool as an MCU fanboy in the movie, someone who constantly comments on the wins and fails of the MCU in the last decade much like the audience would.

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is the star of the show, bringing the same energy and screen presence that we saw in Logan. His motivations, regret and hope are beautifully captured, and complement the funny and slapstick Deadpool, with a serious and angry Wolverine.

Logan is a revered figure in the world of TVA, and the ending of Logan is considered the greatest sacrifice ever by the TVA too, and an important plot point.

Emma Corrin as Casandra Nova is another Omega-level mutant shown in the movie. She has an interesting history and is extremely powerful. She is in there for a few scenes, and an important character in the story, but not delved into much.

Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox brings the same energy to the movie as Tom Wambsgans did to Succession. He is an interesting grey character who can play a good part in future of the MCU.

Other than the characters above the movie is full of appearances from many other goofy, as well as amazing characters from the Marvel Universe.

The makers had a great time playing around with the liberty of variants of every major character to have ever dawned a superhero suit in the Marvel Universe.

Screenplay

The screen comes alive not just due to the energy that Wolverine and Deadpool bring but also the sheer execution of some of the best fight scenes from MCU.

The choreography of both the action scenes and the dance numbers (tough to separate one from another) is top-notch.

The action scenes are brutal with blood and bones flying everywhere, but it is presented amazingly. More than once we went Wow…. wondering how anyone even thinks of this epicness.

The constant breaking of the 4th wall verbally and in action makes the movie a fun ride.

Deadpool is aware of the things outside of the MCU so references to Fox Universe, DCEU, and the world in general fit right in. There are a few nods to the future of MCU which Deadpool is aware of but the characters in the movie are not which makes fun banter.

Deadpool deals with the references and jokes on all other Marvel Characters with care, so although almost every big character is clowned upon, their legacy is respected. The very first scene desecrates something that is considered sacred, but still, you do not hate Deadpool for it.

Verdict

Deadpool and Wolverine is a fun joyride and essentially a homage to the Marvel movies that came out of the FOX universe and before. The extent of the cameos is not restricted just to MCU and Fox there are quite a few references to a bunch of failed superhero movies of the past, and their redemption is well integrated.

We may not feel like it, but at the end of the day, it was the original Xmen back in 2000 that brought Marvel superhero team-ups on the map. The Fox Universe might not have been as successful as the MCU, but they did give us some memorable characters from the wider Marvel Universe.

This movie is the final send-off to Fox Universe before it gets completely integrated into the MCU.

The after-credits nail it home with some BTS from all the old Fox Marvel movies.

Now I won’t say that this is the best MCU movie ever. I am not sure if any MCU movie would ever be able to reach the heights that movies like Civil War, End Game and Infinity War did.

Deadpool & Wolverine is the movie MCU needed right to set it on a proper path after the mess that was phase 5. This was a true introduction to a multiverse outside of the Loki Series. Hopefully whatever is to come next builds on this to get MCU back on track.

Deadpool & Wolverine is a must-watch to experience the chemistry between Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds had years in the making. The off-screen chemistry spilled over amazingly on-screen and for that, I would give this movie an 8/10.
